Business operation transformation at the Pentagon is on the latest High-Risk List from the Government Accountability Office (GAO). GAO says the Defense Department can do more to track its reform efforts.
- Elizabeth Field, Director of Defense Capabilities and Management Issues at GAO, said her office noted progress from the Defense Department last year on improving access to data, but since the chief management officer position was eliminated, the initiative has stalled.
- Field said the message she wanted to convey at her recent testimony to the Senate Armed Services Committee was that business as usual at the department is no longer acceptable given the challenges it and the nation face.
- Field said the Department of Defense needs to make sure individuals tasked with driving reform are empowered to make difficult choices and transformative changes.
