The White House has announced improvements to veterans’ benefits eligibility as part of a Veterans Day proclamation, and that’s just part of the story. The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) organization has made it its mission to support over one million veterans every year.
- DAV’s National Service program provides free assistance to veterans filing disability claims and looking for educational benefits, and Department and Chapter Service Officers help veterans receive the benefits they are entitled to, said Joy Ilem (U.S. Army, ret.), national legislative director for DAV.
- Ilem said her organization works with the Department of Veterans Affairs, advocates for the department’s budget and testifies to Congress on behalf of veterans.
- Major issues veterans are facing now include exposure to toxic chemicals during military service, sexual harassment and mental health challenges exacerbated by the pandemic, said Ilem.
