Data & workforce principles impact on IT modernization strategy
Rod Turk, acting CIO at the Department of Commerce, discusses the roles that data and workforce management have in implementing IT modernization as outlined in the President’s Management Agenda.
While IT modernization is one of the biggest takeaways from the President’s Management Agenda, agencies are finding that two of the PMA’s other priorities are important to their implementation of the strategy: data and workforce.
“The Commerce Department has a very significant data presence. When you take a look at who we have component‑wise, NIST, NOAA which does all the weather prognostication, the Census… and the Patent and Trademark Office. We do petabytes, large numbers of data storage every single day,” said Rod Turk, acting CIO at the Department of Commerce. “In order for us to be able to present that large amount of data and use it in such a way that the American people can create innovation, potentially create jobs, but also to use that data for the people’s purposes, IT modernization is key to doing that.”
