As the military seeks to increase its readiness for all fronts, the U.S. Coast Guard has worked to become a line of defense not only for our physical borders, but our cyberspace ones as well. Government Matters spoke with Rear Admiral Kevin Lunday, Commander of U.S. Coast Guard Cyber Command at the West 2018 conference in San Diego. “The Commandant released our cyber strategy in June of 2015, in that he declared that cyberspace was an operational domain,” Lunday said. “And I think two and a half years later we’re only beginning to understand how profound a statement that is.” According to Lunday, the Coast Guard has three priorities of operating in cyberspace; Defend the Coast Guard networks, to support missions using cyberspace and to protect critical maritime infrastructure from computer-based attacks. Even though the Coast Guard operates under the Department of Homeland Security, they still are coordinating their cyberspace operations with the other branches of the military. “Operations in this domain of cyberspace across government, and even in the private sector, is a team effort,” Lunday said. “The Coast Guard last year aligned significantly its own internal network defense and operations with the Department of Defense… our networks are ‘.mil’.”
