President Biden has nominated a permanent leader for the Office of Federal Financial Management at the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). That nominee is Laurel Blatchford, former chief of staff at the Department of Housing and Urban Development. If the Senate confirms her, Blatchford will be the first permanent OMB controller in almost five years.

  • Danny Werfel, managing director and partner at Boston Consulting Group, former OMB controller and former acting IRS commissioner, said a priority for the new controller will be tracking the large amounts of spending from initiatives such as the American Rescue Plan Act and dealing with improper payments and fraud.
  • Another major focus will be managing federal real estate, which includes many unanswered questions regarding the impact of telework on space requirements, said Werfel.
  • Werfel recommends Blatchford “go on a listening tour” if confirmed to gather information from civil servants and recent political appointees and work with chief financial officers to develop a plan.
