China is turning the climate crisis into an advantage in its competition with the United States, but the U.S. still has a window of opportunity to keep up and stay ahead.

  • Erin Sikorsky, director of the Center for Climate and Security, previously on the National Intelligence Council, said China is using climate change to try to gain support from countries most vulnerable to its effects and is trying to control minerals needed for renewable energy.
  • Sikorsky said she recommends the United States share technology and tools for climate risk mitigation with partners and allies and help them finance and transition towards clean energy.
  • She recommends the U.S. understand China’s weak points, including high coastal community populations and food security issues, when assessing the country’s plans.
