On Dec. 2, the Pentagon unveiled the B-21 Raider, after years of keeping its development a secret. It’s the U.S.’s first new bomber aircraft in over 30 years.

  • The B-21 is “radically different” from the B-2 bomber, and has been modernized for the 21st century, Maj. Gen. Douglas Raaberg (USAF Ret.), executive vice president of the Air and Space Forces Association, explained.
  • The aircraft has open-system architecture, which means the manufacturer can update the electronic components remotely, so that the aircraft is always taking off with the most modern software, he said.
  • China does not currently have an aircraft that is comparable to the B-21, according to Raaberg.
