Robert Work, former Deputy Secretary of Defense, breaks down what the Pentagon’s latest budget request means for technology spending and executing the National Defense Strategy.

The Defense Department’s FY21 budget request includes more money for research and development. Robert Work, former Deputy Secretary of Defense, says that it’s important the Pentagon lead the way in certain lines of research.

“There is no market in the commercial sector for hypersonics. The Department of Defense has to spend that money. There is a lot of money spent on 5G and on microelectronics. What the Department is looking at is trusted microelectronics, making sure the supply chain is totally clean and that we have ready access to all of the materials and foundries et cetera to make them,” Work said. “In AI and Autonomy, there is a lot going on in the commercial sector, but specific defense applications, the Department of Defense has to take the lead.”
