The Defense Department saw many changes this year, with new initiatives and programs across all of the services. “Government Matters” reviewed the biggest defense stories of the year.
- Howard Altman, senior managing editor at Military Times, said the end of 20 years of U.S. presence in Afghanistan is a huge story and a continuing issue.
- Valerie Insinna, reporter at Breaking Defense, said a major story has been the presidential administration transition, with new officials and initiatives, and that 2022 will be a bellwether of what the Defense Department and National Defense Strategy look like under the Biden administration.
- Altman said if there is a Chinese invasion of Taiwan or a Russian invasion of Ukraine, those will be the biggest stories of 2022.
