The fiscal 2022 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) passed by Congress in early December added nearly $650 million to the military’s space programs. Congress said in the NDAA that it is “all in for space.” Sandra Erwin, senior staff writer at SpaceNews, discussed some of the top military space stories of 2021.

  • Erwin said 2021 has seen advanced technology demonstrations from adversaries, including a “very concerning” Russian anti-satellite weapons test, increasing Congress’ interest in further investments.
  • Erwin said the National Reconaissance Office published a solicitation for commercial synthetic aperture radar (SAR) space imagery, very specific, valuable data for national security that more commercial providers have been developing.
  • She said the Pentagon created a Trusted Capital Program to increase visibility into venture capital firms investing in the space industry, as Chinese investments continue to be a concern.
