Inside the FBI’s Biometrics Technology Center
In September of 2014, the FBI retired its old fingerprint system and replaced it with the Next Generation Identification System. The $1.2 billion NGI program sends digital fingerprints to agents in the field and uses facial recognition technology to help them track down suspected terrorists.
Today, NGI is fully operational.
The program is not without controversy.
